What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the ancient healing art of relieving pain and treating illness by inserting needles into various acupoints of the human body. Begun in China over two thousand years ago, acupuncture has now been introduced into most countries of the world.
How does acupuncture work?
By inserting special needles into the acupoints, the acupuncturist is able to adjust the function through the acupuncture channels of a specific area, an organ, or the total body from abnormal to normal.
Is acupuncture painful?
Pain need not be a concern for prospective patients. As the needles are being inserted, the patient might experience only a slight sensation of stinging. During the treatment itself, the patient may feel mild sensations of burning, pressure, heaviness, or numbness; which is normal.
How many treatments are recommended?
Because of the differences in the nature and duration of the disease/disorder being treated and the differences in the body constitution of individuals, the number of required treatments varies from patient ot patients.
Is there any drug used on the acupuncture needles?
Absolutely no drug is applied to a needle. Only disposable, fully sterilized needles are used.
How many needles are used for a treatment?
The number of needles depends on the nature of the problem being treated. Usually between ten to twenty needles are used; however, some treatments required more.
How deep are the needles inserted?
Needle depth depends on the part of the body being treated. Approximately, one-half inch or less on hand, foot, head, or chest; somewhat deeper on hip, thigh, and shoulder. Depth is also depended on the angle in which the needle is inserted.
Why do first treatments sometimes seem to aggravate the pain?
The occasional initial feeling of increased pain does not in any way indicate a worsening of the problem. instead, it is the body reacting to the beginning of the healing process. (If a patient has a question, he or she should call the clinic.)
What is "moxibustion" treatment?
Moxibustion is treating disease with ignited "moxa", a kind of herb, to produce heat on the acupoint or on a certain location of the body.
How long do the therapeutic results last after acupuncture treatments end?
The duration of the results differ with each patient, because many factors are involved. Those factors include the following: patient's age, general health, lifestyle, and the nature of the disorder for which he/she was treated.
Is acupuncture dangerous? Acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years, and is proven to be a relatively safe treatment.
